Crim’expo: Science investigates invites you to explore all the disciplines of
forensic science, by taking part in a thrilling investigation in which the
visitor is the hero. At the Cité des Sciences et de
l’Industrie (Science and Industry Museum), from 10 February 2009
to 3 January 2010.
Set in an area of 600 m², Crim’expo, la
science enquête is split into a series of well-delineated sections: the
crime scene, eight scientific laboratories for gathering evidence and, lastly,
four areas to round off the investigation (composite imaging, interrogation,
charging and conclusion).
At the entrance, visitors are invited to take
up a pencil and investigation notebook. This notebook will guide you through the
exhibition. In it, you can note down everything you find out from the
experiments carried out in the eight forensic laboratories.
The first stage in the circuit is the crime scene. A faithful reconstruction
of the manager’s office enables you to see the circumstances in which the crime
took place, and to observe the traces left by the intervention of the various
forensic experts. The area is cordoned off and an outline on the floor shows the
exact position of the body. It is also the opportunity to make a detailed list
of the evidence – a cartridge, traces of blood, textile fibres, fingerprints,
etc. – found at the scene. Film footage of witness statements made by those who
discovered the body, together with photos of the six suspects, complete the
information available to you to conduct your investigation.
The second section consists of eight separate areas devoted to the different
fields of forensic science: forensic medicine, fingerprinting, forensic
dentistry, biological and DNA evidence, shoe printing, fibre traces, forensic
entomology and ballistics. Here, visitors are able to find out about these
various disciplines.
The order in which you visit these eight laboratories
doesn’t matter; what matters is how shrewd and careful you are when choosing, in
each of them, the information that will allow you to discover the motive for the
crime and therefore catch the perpetrator. Visitors observe, carry out
experiments and put together a whole series of valuable information that will
help them bit by bit to form an opinion. Then comes the final stage: the
investigation. Composite imaging, reconstruction of the crime and interrogation
of suspects… The moment has come to reveal the motive and name the culprit.
