Company description
General description :
For its 250th Anniversary, celebrated in 2005, Place Stanislas was completely restored, making it just as beautiful as it was when it was first built!
Nancy is famous all over the world for the quality of its magnificent period buildings (Place Stanislas, Place de la Carrière and Place d’Alliance) classed by UNESCO as part of our World Heritage since 1983.
Now completely renovated, further embellished and pedestrian-only, Place Stanislas has long been considered one of the most beautiful squares in the world.
The restoration of the square ended in May 2005. The new paving is as near to the original as possible: light stone with black diagonals giving the square its characteristic shape, gilded railings, Stanislas’ statue... everything that adds to its overall appearance has been carefully restored to make this harmonious 18thC architectural masterpiece more beautiful and enhancing each element in turn.
More than ever a popular place to meet or celebrate special events, for young and old alike, the square now, 250 years after it was inaugurated, is as beautiful as it was in the beginning.
Nancy also has a number of superb museums, and monuments built over the centuries, from the Middle Ages to the 20thC, including many fine examples of Art Nouveau.
In fact Nancy can be seen as three, or even four towns:
- the Old Town dating from medieval times and the Renaissance in the area of Grande Rue and the palace of the Dukes of Lorraine,
- the New Town, that of Charles III, built at the end of the 17thC, just south of the Old Town,
- the outstanding collection of late 18thC buildings ordered by Stanislas with the aim of linking the Old and New Towns,
- finally, the Ecole de Nancy suburbs dating from the late 19th/early 20thC, and other Art Nouveau works spread throughout the city, with their surprising, airy, slender and gracious curves that one comes across by surprise, at a bend in a road, in a garden...; this area is mainly on the fringe of the first three “historic towns”.
Nancy is also a gourmet’s delight.
Its culinary specialities and local products are well known. Everyone has heard of its famous bergamots and macaroons, quiches and Mirabelle plums, but many other regional dishes are well worth discovering, and often have their own history or particular anecdotes that add to the flavour!
Nancy has a thriving artistic and cultural life with a national reputation: the opera, the ballet, a symphony and lyric orchestra, a centre of dramatic art... It has three universities with 48,000 students. Greater Nancy is a rapidly-expanding, dynamic and attractive conurbation with a population of 330,000. It is also a particularly verdant city that has made a major effort to maintain its attractive environment in the midst of the many changes taking place.
In brief, Nancy is a city that delights all who come here, whatever their age and interests: culture, our artistic and architectural heritage, urban and rural walks, museums, science, botany, gastronomy or just the quality of its life-style..
The 4-star Nancy Tourist Office will be delighted to assist you and provide all the information you may need to make the most of your visit. It also offers a range of tourist products to suit all tastes and budgets, however long you choose to stay!
