More about cheap golf breaks in France

With more than 500 courses, France is the obvious choice for a cheap golf break. In fact, France is the home of the first golf course in continental Europe, which was developed in Pau in 1856 and where it’s still possible to play a round today. The partners of the France Tourism Development Agency have selected a range of cheap golf packages, including discounted hotel accommodation, which will change regularly on the Affordable France website. France is the perfect destination for cheap golf breaks for British and Irish visitors due to its proximity and excellent transport links. From Alpine golf courses with panoramic mountain views to coastal venues on the Côte d’Azur, there’s something to suit all tastes and budgets. Many golf courses today have hotels attached, often featuring gyms and spas, so there’s plenty to do when you’ve finished your round and golf widows are unlikely to get bored. In the south, the three-star Golf Hotel Montpellier Juvignac, which has cheap room rates at weekends off season, is just 15 km (9.3mi) from the coast and is the perfect place to combine a golf break with developing your suntan. Out of season, the towns and villages of Langudeoc-Roussillon will provide a fine distraction from the golf course. Contact Montpellier’s tourist office for a list of free activities. France’s regions offer a variety of themed golf packages, for example, Golf et Vin en Bourgogne (Golf and Wine in Burgundy) includes a wine tasting and three nights’ accommodation in a characterful B&B as well as access to an 18-hole golf course. While you’re in the area, make time to visit MuséoParc Alésia in Alise-Sainte-Reine, an archaeological museum on the spot where Caesar is said to have defeated in the Gauls in 52BC, which is due to open in spring 2012. Thanks to these special golf packages, playing golf in France needn’t break the bank. To save money on food, buy snacks from a local market and savour a cheap and tasty lunch on the green instead of wasting time and money in the club restaurant. Although, eating at lunchtime in restaurants often works out cheaper than eating in the evening – look out for formules (set menus) and the plat du jour (dish of the day). So whatever type of golf package you’re interested in, keep checking the Affordable France website for cheap deals on golf hotels and golf breaks.
