General description  :   Nantes, "le souffle Atlantique"

The capital of the west of France has lots of treats in store for you. In 2009 : Château des ducs de Bretagne, Loire Estuaire, International Flower Show and Machines de l'île.

/

For history fans, there's a heritage marked by the seal of Anne of Brittany and the great maritime adventures of the 18th Century; for thrill-seekers, there's a host of cultural and festive events you've never seen before; and for people who live life to its full, this is a fantastic city which knows how to share its best.

The city of Anne of Brittany

A classified "Ville d'Art et d'Histoire," the old capital of the Duke of Brittany has a lot of wonderful surprises to amaze you, all starting with its castle. The construction of the chateau was inaugurated in 1466 by François II, the last duke of the fiercely independent Brittany, and later completed by his daughter, the Duchess Anne. A few steps away, the majestic gothic cathedral holds the astonishing tomb of François II.

The Castle of the dukes of Brittany

The 15th century ducal residence is now home to the brand new Nantes History Museum, with over 800 objects exhibited in a contemporary display setting. Full of life and energy, the castle hosts temporary exhibitions, cultural events, various activities, a restaurant and a gift & bookshop.

The Machines de l'Ile

An extraordinary attraction right in the heart of the Ile de Nantes. Its poetry and imagination are guaranteed to delight and touch every spectator. The 12-meter tall elephant weighs 40 tons. It can carry up to 30 people on its back and in its belly for a 30-minute stroll on the Ile de Nantes.

18th : the Golden Century of Nantes

It was on the Ile Feydeau that the richest ship owners had their buildings erected. Often likened to a wrecked ship of stone, the Ile Feydeau still seems to undulate along the boulevards which have replaced the Loire.

The heritage treasures of Nantes:

- The Passage Pommeraye, classified historic monument.
- The Cathedral of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul
- The Graslin Theatre
- The LU tower, the heritage of a flourishing economic history.
- The Beghin-Say factory, the jewel in the crown of the architecture of the sugar industry.
- The Cigale, one of the world's finest brasseries. (Website: www.lacigale.com)
- Le Corbusier's Cité Radieuse, the radiant city, at Rezé and, more recently, the new Palais de Justice lawcourt built by Jean Nouvel.

A palette of passions and emotions:

The Nantes Musée des Beaux-Arts fine arts museum is a top class cultural showcase. This magnificent late 19th century building houses, around a massive and luminous central patio, one of the finest collections in France. Guided tours and children's entertainments are available.

The switched-on city - The nights of Nantes are said to be endless.

The Lieu Unique

This is the cultural heart of the town, with its rich and colorful activities: music, dance, arts, theatre, you name it. The Bar Unique is the meeting place for the in-crowd and electronic music fans.

La Folle Journée - Classical Music Festival

With 120,000 tickets sold in its last edition, the Folle Journée has indeed become a major event! The concept is to provide a festive weekend like nowhere else in the world, presenting hundreds of much shorter concerts at better prices and, of course, with the music at the highest level.

Blue Nantes

The city once called "the Venice of the West" is built at the meeting point of several magnificent rivers. Of course there's the Loire, the last wild river, but don't forget the Erdre, which François I called "the most beautiful river in France", or the Sèvre Nantaise with its pastoral charms.

Green Nantes

Nantes is France's 6th largest city, but don't ignore its greenery. There are dozens of gardens and parks to offer a totally different view of this Europe's most livable city. Don't miss the botanical garden in front of the train station!

Wines of Nantes - Make your taste buds sing:

With its 15,000 hectares, ideally situated at the mouth of the Loire Valley, between land and sea, the greatest vineyard of Nantes offers a whole range of wines including, of course, the famous Muscadet.

Atlantic Vacations

Nantes is surrounded by an extraordinary variety of landscapes. You can choose from the 9-km long of a fine-sand seaside at La Baule, known as the "Europe's most beautiful beach," and Pornic, the last port of Brittany, with its charming orange sand.

It is impossible to mention everything in only a few words. Situated at the crossroads of Brittany, Anjou and Vendée, Nantes invites you to the endless pleasures of discovery.
