General description : The Aude, Cathar Country

In the Cité of Carcassonne, in the heart of the Cathar Country, the history of the Perfecti, of viscount de Trencavel, knights and the inquisition continues to echo. The largest medieval, fortified citadel in Europe still inhabited today, the Cité of Carcassonne, a primary location in the history of French patrimony, was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1997.

Located in the département of the Aude, between the Mediterranean sea and the Pyrenees, under the sun of the French Midi, the Cité of Carcassonne forms the heart of a land of contrasts :

rocky slopes in the Corbières, where the vine, the queen of the slopes, reigns,

rustling scrubland with its heady scents and mosaic of the Minervois lands,

wooded uplands of the Montagne Noire (Black Mountain), land of heather and lakes,

vast fertile undulations of the Lauragais where the green water of the Canal du Midi sparkles,

deep and rumbling gorges, a paradise for white water sports' enthusiasts,

protected lagoon areas of the coastline, refuge for rare animal species and plants,

Mediterranean beaches with azure-tinted wavelets like a thousand grazing sheep to enchant bathers and surfers.

The Aude, the Cathar Country is also a Country of Gastronomy and Wine : eel bourride (stew), wild boar stew or “Cathar Country” lamb, are feasts for the gourmets, without forgetting the cassoulet of worldwide reputation and the great wines of Corbières, Fitou Minervois or Cabardès...

The Aude,the Cathar Country is still a Country replete with history, moulded by men and the centuries, which have left a rich patrimony to be shared : Grottoes and megaliths of impressive size, Roman and Visigothic remains, and imposing abbeys, reflect the spiritual influence on the region…

Beyond the Cité of Carcassonne itself, vast horizons open up to you. Perched on their “Pogs” (peaks) of dizzying heights, the Cathar Country châteaux await you, their indomitable silhouettes punctuating the Midi sky. On windy evenings you will perhaps hear the echo of the crusade against the Albigensians… the breath of History…
