General description  :

SÈTE ON THE MEDITERRANEAN

Sète, placed like a pearl between the Mediterranean Sea and the Thau lagoon, famous for its oysters, the town is separated from the Cap d'Agde by twelve kilometres of fine, sandy beaches.

Sète has kept all its authenticity due to its port. Located in the very heart of the town, the port provides something to see throughout the year with the daily coming and going of trawlers and cruise liners, escorted by seagulls.

Sète, “The little Venice of Languedoc”, with its quaint neighbourhoods crisscrossed by canals, where the coloured facades of the sunlit quays are reflected in the water: just as much a seaside resort as a bustling town with shops open all throughout the year.

Cultural, with museums dedicated to its most famous sons, Georges Brassens and Paul Valéry, not to forget the great painters that come to Sète for its very particular light. The International Museum of Modest Arts and the Regional Centre for Contemporary Art are also part of the cultural heritage of the town.

Gastronomic, with its impressive menu of local specialities like fish soup, stuffed mussels and squid, cuttlefish in red pepper sauce, octopus and tomato pies, oysters and other seafood platters.

In the heart of the town, take a walk through the covered market; it virtually overflows with fish and shellfish from the Mediterranean or the Thau Lagoon. As well as being a meeting place for the people of Sète, it is a treasure trove of local gastronomic specialities and the ideal place for local restaurant owners to do their daily shopping.

Festive, with its traditional summer festivities: the Saint Pierre Festival for the patron saint of fishermen, the Saint Louis festival with its nautical jousting tournament, and other enjoyable events and outdoor markets all throughout the year.

Sporty, with its tradition as a nautical centre: Sète served as host city for the Sailing Tour de France, and as the training base for the America’s Cup for the Swiss challenger “Alinghi”. It has nationally ranked football, volleyball (3rd ranked French club) and water-polo teams.
