Company description

General description  :   Capital of the Franche-Comté region, birthplace of Victor Hugo, Besançon is also France’s greenest town. Charming parks and the majestic Citadelle make a perfect setting for its unique savoir-faire, warm welcome and easy-going way of life. France and Spain fought bitterly over Besançon in the 17th century, and Victor Hugo gave it the nickname old Spanish town. It's easy to see why it was so coveted, for it has an ideal atmosphere for the pursuit of learning. The proof is the number of thinkers, writers and inventors who were born here. Victor Hugo, of course, but also Proudhon (19th-century socialist thinker), Tristan Bernard (French novelist and playwright), the Count de Chardonnet (creator of artificial silk), and even the Lumière brothers (inventors of the cinematograph) ... Besançon likes to share its warm, typically French atmosphere with others: every year its Centre for Applied Linguistics welcomes hundreds of students from over 30 différent countries around the world. History shows they come to the right place! The Citadelle was built by Vauban, Officer of Fortifications under Louis XIV, at the end of the 17th century. It contains several museums, and above all a noctarium. Housed in an old powder magazine, this unique animal enclosure reveals all about the lives of local nocturnal mammals - shedding light on darkness, so to speak. The Doubs forms a loop of water around the town. A bateau-mouche tour through locks and the citadelle tunnel lets you make the round trip without touching land - an intriguing and unusual way to appreciate the town. Meet at the St Paul landing stage, on the pont de la République, (peak season only : from 1st April to 30th September). Innovation is an age-old tradition in Besançon : it was here that the quartz watch was invented, the fruit of the clock industry’s evolution towards microtechnology ; and before that, France's first museum was founded here in 1694. It was then in part made up of the private collection of the Cardinal de Granvelle, a minister of Charles V.
