General description :
Astonish your holidays!
Stroll on the long beaches of fine sand, savor the tranquillity of the Marais Poitevin, vibrate face to the vertiginous images of the Futuroscope, traverse the Charente vineyards, sample the savors of generous gastronomy: From land to ocean, Poitou-Charentes dissimulates innumerable treasures.
Benefiting from a privileged geographical situation, the four French departments (Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres, Vienne) of the most sunlit region of the Atlantic West offer a whole mosaic of landscapes. Visitors particularly cherish the islands of Ré, Oléron and Aix, yet also adore the seaside resorts of the Côte de Beauté, such as Royan. What with over 3 million tourists a year, La Rochelle is one of the most frequented maritime towns in all of France.
Each year, the 532 hotel-restaurants and 446 campgrounds of the region register over 11.7 million overnight stays. That said, the lands of Marennes-Oléron oysters, of Pineau des Charentes and of goat cheese propose alternative lodging formulas, including guest houses and the rural hostels that thrive throughout the territory.
Wishing to irrigate inland areas, Poitou-Charentes banks upon its historical, natural and tourist-oriented patrimony. What a wide range of high points embracing the Charente valley, the La Rochelle aquarium, the Cognac houses, Roman art and animal attraction parks…
Even further inland, close to the gates of Niort, "Green Venice" (Venise Verte) and its nonchalant meanders lure lovers of nature enticed by a traditional small boat promenade. Pockmarked with castles, churches, abbeys, fortifications and other bastions, the region cultivates its prestigious past suffused with history. And month after month after month, it regales its guests with an ambitious agenda of cultural events (celebrations, festivals, concerts…) highlighted by large-scale happenings such as the Francofolies of La Rochelle, the International Folklore Festival in Confolens and the comic book extravaganza (another festival!) of Angoulême.
Equipped with four thermal stations and six thalassotherapy centers, the region has developed a meritorious reputation in health and fitness-based tourism. These activities have been steadily growing.
In Poitou-Charentes bathing, fishing, sailing, golf, sea promenades, strolls on foot, on horseback and by bike compose the varied daily fare of your holidays. What a fine invitation for sharing an art of living combining conviviality with authenticity!
