Description - City-breaks in France

Description of activity "City-breaks in France"  :   Reims, located at 100 miles at the north-east of Paris, holds all the advantages of a regional capital, with busy shopping streets to stroll along, and those of a city of great artistic interest which is endowed with an exceptional cultural heritage due to its bimillenary history.
The former capital city of the Roman province of Belgium has kept from Antiquity the largest three-arch gate of the Roman world, the Gate of Mars. After the baptism of Clovis, King of Franks, in 496 by archbishop Remi, Reims became the site of the coronations of the Kings of France between 1223 and 1825. This tradition gave Reims the most beautiful Gothic façade of the kingdom : the one of Notre-Dame Cathedral. Reims is also the place where the surrender of German troops was signed in Eisenhower's headquarters in Reims too on May 7th, 1945. Today of course Reims is famous for it's champagne.
As many as 4 monuments are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage : Notre-Dame Cathedral, masterpiece of Gothic art and famous for its wonderful stained glass windows (13th century and Chagall). The Tau Palace, former residence of the archbishops of Reims, which nowadays houses sculptures, tapestries, valuables, sacramental gold and silver, and the coronation regalia of Charles X. Saint-Remi Basilica is the largest Romanesque pilgrimage church in northern France and the shrine of Saint Remi. The former royal Abbey of Saint-Remi today houses the museum of History and Archaeology and its impressive collections from the prehistory to the Renaissance.
The prestigious Champagne Houses should not be missed either. Get into the about 150 miles of cellars that are often former Gallo-Roman chalk pits and discover the secrets of Champagne making.
Apart from this, you will enjoy the celebrations that take place in Reims every year:
- the "Sacres du Folklore" : the world's best folklore troupes take part in June in the largest festival of Northern France ;
- Joan of Arc Festival : in June you can stroll along the wooden houses of the medieval market and follow the pageant of Charles VII's coronation with Joan of Arc ;
- the "Flâneries Musicales de Reims" : every summer the Summer Promenade Concerts offer about 100 concerts given by renowned classical and jazz artists throughout the city ;
- the "Reims Jazz Festival" takes place in November in the neo-Tudor "Domaine Pommery" ;
- the Christmas Village and the Cribs Road, that crosses the wine-growing villages ;
- and many other events all year round.
